Abstract:
When two-dimensional atomic layers are stacked incommensurately, the interference between the two lattice arrangement leads to new order to the system. In this talk, I will discuss the impact of such order on the electronic properties of atomic layers ranging from twisted bilayer graphene, double-walled carbon nanotubes to quasicrystals. I will also discuss the emergent phenomena such as the fractal evolution of electronic energy spectrum (a.k.a., Hofstadter butterfly) and the emergence of infinite number of Dirac cone replicas in quasicrystals.
