Abstract:
We construct a new type of defect in the 3D toric code model. This model only has point-like and closed string-like excitations, but one can construct open string-like excitations by introducing this defect. The open string can end on the defect, and it can be split off from the defect by fusing the endpoint with another open string. We discuss several ideas to generalize this observation.
