Abstract:
Thanks to high intrinsic electron and hole mobility, graphene has shown pronounced ballistic transport effects such as transverse magnetic focusing (TMF), Fabry-Pérot-like interference, ballistic snake states, and Veselago lensing effect among many others. On the other hand, graphene has been one of the potential candidates for developing new spintronic applications due to its large experimental flexibility and compatibilities for various magnetic contacts. Here, we demonstrate an interesting possibility to combine ballistic transport pronounced in graphene with unique tuning capabilities of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) through interfacial interactions with semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). Among various ballistic transport phenomena, we have specifically chosen the TMF because it can not only provide spectroscopic evidence of the spin-orbit coupled bands but also allow us to investigate the electron dynamics in the system. We have indeed found clear signatures of SOC-induced band splitting in the system as well as suppressed electron-electron scattering. We will discuss the impact of this work and future directions towards ballistic graphene spintronics.
